Session 9 & 10 | The Scent Work Series

Juliette Mylius

Welcome to our final training session post of The Scent Work Series! In this post we will discuss how sessions 9 and 10 went and what we did!

Before we get into the training talk, a huge thank you to everyone that has followed along with this series and supported our Scent Work journey! We hope this series has encouraged you to get into a type of dog training yourself and shown you how fun training can be!

Please note that even with this series ending, this does not mean our scent work training will stop! It will be incorporated into our regular training routine! So don’t worry, Duke will still be enjoying doing some scent work!

This is the final training post of the series. On Saturday, we will be released our ‘Overall Guide to Scent Work’! Even with the SWS finishing up, this will still stay up on our website (and YouTube) and in the future we might release a special ‘update post’!

Enjoy!

Session 9

As previously said, session 9 and 10 are simple. For the past 4 sessions, we have been mainly practicing and going over everything that we have learnt and not rushing ahead!

So, with our usual set up, we started training with, guess what? Obedience! Then we got straight into some sw…

The aim of this session was to revise the previously introduced, 3 tin exercise. This is where I would put down 3 tins, only 1 of them being hot. Then, when Duke sniffed the hot tin, he gets rewarded.

However, what do I do if he sniffs the cold tins?

Well, usually I would just ignore that and wait till he goes to the hot one (normally instantly). If he is just standing at the cold one for a while though I give him a few cues to hint that it’s not the right one like:

  • Saying ‘no’ and then ‘search’
  • Moving slightly
  • Pointing in the direction of the right one

If none of this work however, then I would notice that he needs a break and would either start wrapping up the training session or move to some obedience for a bit.

To wrap up the session, I ended with obedience!

Session 10

As for session 10, we practically did all the same things as session 9! Working on 3 tins and 4 tins etc.

This will probably be our focus for the next few sessions so that we can become confident and accurate with it!

This post was quite a short one, however on Saturday we have our longest post (on our website) yet coming out!!

This training session was also filmed so you can check out some footage of it on our YouTube @practicepaws or below:

This video will be released on Saturday the 30th! Please stay tuned on our YouTube!

The FINAL post in the series will be out on Saturday (the 30th)! This will be very long and informative with a complete guide to scent work as well as a summary to our Scent Work Series! Thanks for following along and we hope you are getting excited for the final post!

Feel free to give us some feedback on how you’re finding this series so far on our Instagram @practice_paws we would love to hear your feedback and of course also any recommendations if you are already training in Scent Work!
