How to Make Your Scent Work Kit

Juliette Mylius | 8 August 2023

After recently starting training, it’s time to discuss what we use! In this post we will look at what is in my Scent Work Kit and how it is organised…

So, when training in scent work, you need some equipment. The obvious things would be essential oils, cotton buds and tins. But there are also some smaller things that easy to forget.

Starting off with the obvious, how do you store your scent work equipment? Well, after doing a bunch of research, I discovered that a lot of people recommend using make up bags! These work especially well because of their size, and some have compartments to sort your equipment with. The one I currently use is 23x17x16 cm.

Now what do I have inside? Well, here’s a full list, then we’ll look specifically into every item and what it is used for:

  • 4 Glass jars
  • Cotton buds
  • Essential Oils (Birch, Anise, Clove, Cypress)
  • Droppers (1 per essential oil)
  • Tweezers
  • Tins
  • Disposable Gloves

So, to start off with the big things, I have 4 glass jars (1 for each scent). This is used to store your scented cotton buds in that we previously prepared. Then we have the essential oils, these are used with the droppers when the cotton buds need more scent to them every 3 – 4 months. The tweezers are used when putting the cotton buds in the training tins. You can just have 1 pair and wash after use, but I have 4 pairs (1 for each scent).

When you are handling the essential oils, the gloves are essential. These make sure you don’t get any of the scent on your hands. And of course, the tins are used in training.

I also like to keep a permanent marker in my scent work kit just in case any labelling needs to be done or rubs off.

Regarding labelling, each jar has been labelled with a different scent and the date of when I prepared the cotton buds inside it. The tins are also specifically labelled with scents as well as the tweezers, essential oils, droppers etc.

In the scent work kit, I only keep my ‘scent specific’ tins inside (The tins that are labelled and are used for a scent e.g., birch or clove). I do also have more tins that are always cold (used as decoys), but these are kept separately.

So how is the kit organised? Well, on the bottom I keep my 4 jars with the circular tins. Then in the 3 pockets: one pocket has the birch oil and dropper, the second pocket has the clove oil and dropper, the third pocket has the cypress and anise oils and droppers.

Then in the zipped compartment (on the lid) I keep the tweezers, my small rectangle tins, a pair of disposable gloves and a sharpie.

And that’s all for my scent work kit! These would be the main things that I recommend putting in it and having for your scent work training. Thanks for coming to check out this series!
